Factors, Those are Related to Serum Gamma-Glutamyltransferase and Urine 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in Men Older Than 40 Years Old
Kim Sung-Hi

Abstract
Background: We studied factors, those are associated with serum GGT and urine 8-OHdG to assess the usefulness of serum GGT as a biomarker of oxidative stress.

Methods: January to April, 2005. 186 men, aged 40-70 years old, were participated. Including variables were 1) Health behavior 2) Blood tests 3) urine 8-OHdG. T-tests were done between low- and high-level group(GGT, 8-OHdG) Correlation test among log-transformed GGT, log-transformed 8-OHdG and other variables. Multiple regression analysis about GGT and 8-OHdG were done.

Results: Mean age(SD) is 50.78(7.70) years old. Both GGT and 8-OHdG were distributed right-skewed then log transformations were performed. Log GGT were correlated with age, BP, body fat%, TG, TC, Uric acid, AFP, Alcohol and log 8-OHdG with body fat%, SGOT, FBS, HbA1c, AFP, CEA, RA factor(p<0.05). Multiple regression analysis, log GGT was explained by AFP, TG, uric acid and log 8-OHdG by AFP, FBS (p<0.05). However, association between serum GGT and urine 8-OhdG was not significant(r=0.08, P>0.05).

Conclusions: Respectively, GGT and 8-OHdG were associated with risk factors of CVD but factors were not overlapped(except for AFP). Though serum GGT is reliable, easy and not expensive, more studies will be needed to assess the usefulness of GGT as a biomarker.
